Building a Baby

PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT
Did you know that you’re a baby’s motor control develops from the head down and from the center of the body out?
Did you know that your baby has started to develop long before you may have even known you were pregnant or found out the sex of your baby?


There’s a method to all of this madness.


In a previous blog post, I’ve talked about the importance of tummy time and how it helps to develop the spine’s natural curve, neck musculature, and even the core. Now, let’s take a step back. Before the baby is actually here on this earth with us, and talk about development during pregnancy.


This will be short and to the point.


The central nervous system begins to develop as early as the second week of conception and continues long after birth. Motor patterns begin to lay down their framework during the first trimester. Certain cellular positions are established as well as cellular signals. Synapses are created between neurons in the nervous system. Certain switches are being turned on while others are being suppressed. The framework is generated for your new baby.


Today 3D and 4D sonography are now utilized to examine the intense rapid development of motor patterns at the foundational level of the neuronal network forming. By the sixth week of conception, the heart is pumping blood and the brain in functioning rapidly. The brain is basically starting this whole new business and has to work over time. By the 12th week, sensory nerve endings are in place and working distinguishing between pain and pleasure. Between weeks 16 and 17, the baby begins the sucking pattern with his mouth and shortly there after, the baby can hear sounds from the mother. By the 26th week, all neurons of the visual cortex (the area of the brain that responsible for processing vision) are present. And, by the beginning of the second trimester primitive reflexes, those actions brought on by the central nervous system for survival, are beginning to arise and become apparent.


The tactile system, the vestibular system, the olfactory system, the auditory system, the gustatory system, and the visual system all step onto the scene for this new baby within the first seven weeks of conception. Notice that I have not even mentioned the second and third trimesters nor have I gone into significant detail.


Building a baby has much more intricate details and more complex than anyone of us could imagine. It’s a miraculous process that many of us do not respect in this modern world. The rates of autism, learning disabilities, allergies, and many more are soaring. Before there becomes a pill to build the textbook artificial baby, perhaps we should take a few steps back to consciously conceive?
