[VIDEO] Define “Safe”

[VIDEO] Define “Safe”

[vc_video link=”http://youtu.be/GV4msMDsQno”]

We hear it all the time: “Is that safe?” “Should she be doing that?” “That looks dangerous.”

The link Lindsey shared yesterday is a perfect example. Kristi Olivares surfed throughout her pregnancy- all 9 months of it. I’m sure a lot of people would think that to be quite irresponsible.

There’s so much that could happen!

What if she falls?

How can she balance with such a big belly?

What if she hurts the baby?

What does her Dr. say?

While these are all valid questions, let’s remember that Kristi knows her body better than anyone else. She knew her limitations and used caution when necessary.

Having only surfed a few times, I instantly thought, “Wow. I’m impressed she could balance with a big belly! When I was pregnant I could barely walk I was so off balance!”

Most people’s reactions to pregnancy-related “dangers” stem from the exact conversation I had with myself:

WHEN I WAS PREGNANT, _____________” and they immediately try to compare their experience with the one in question. This makes absolutely no sense. Remember I have only surfed maybe 4 times. Ever. But Kristi has been surfing regularly for FOUR years. Her body is accustomed to surfing, her sense of balance has been perfected over the past FOUR years, she knows the ins and outs of the sport because she’s been doing it for- yep- FOUR years!

I would never suggest a pregnant woman hoist herself up on a surfboard if she wasn’t extremely familiar with that particular sport. Just like I would never recommend a woman start CrossFit, running, or anything else for the first time if she were newly pregnant.

It’s all about perspective and it’s all about each individual’s body, comfort level, level of experience in the said activity, and how it affects her.

Kristi saw Surfing as a stress reliever and something that made her happy. This, no doubt, made a huge difference in not only her Pregnancy but her labor and transition into parenthood. When you are releasing Endorphins, your Baby is feeling those hormones also. Same with stress.

Kudos to you, Kristi, for following your heart and your body’s lead, and congratulations on your beautiful birth!
