The Unpredictability of Childbirth

The Unpredictability of Childbirth

Childbirth is one of the most unpredictable life experiences you’ll ever go through. Sure, you can plan and read every book out there and take every class, but ultimately we just don’t have control over how things are going to play out.

I’ve attended 2 births in the last 2 weeks. Both moms were 41 weeks and 6 days. Both moms were what we would call “favorable” for an induction, meaning their bodies were showing signs that it was ready and would accept an induction very well. Both moms were low risk with average size babies.

Both moms had completely different outcomes. One easily went into labor and had her baby 5 hours later. The other took more effort to get her into labor, but her body still wasn’t quite ready. She had a C Section after 15 hours of trying everything we could. We may never know why her body wasn’t ready. She was at the midnight hour as no OB would let her go past 42 weeks, so the induction was necessary.

Nature can be a bitch.

Here’s what I know about People. They fall in 2 camps:

  1. People who don’t mind unpredictability and have faith that everything will unfold as it’s meant to.
  2. People who like to know exactly how things are going to unfold. We sometimes call these people “Type A” or “control freaks.”

I don’t think either of these are good or bad- they just are who they are. And that’s ok. I probably fall somewhere in the middle- as do a lot of us in this world.

Most things in life we can control- our hair color, what we eat, who we have a relationship with. And, with the help of modern science and technology, we can also manipulate a lot of things that used to be beyond our control- fertility, air conditioning, our online presence.

But still, after all these hundreds of thousands of years, Childbirth. Is. Still. The. Same.

This week in my HypnoBirthing class I showed a video from the 80s that had WordArt on the screen. Remember that? I laughed as I introduced the video clip by commenting that while the hairstyles have changed, Birth remains the same. And as much as we want to predict, plan, organize, obsess over all the details about how our birth is going to go- you just can’t. Nature has a plan of Her own, and we just have to trust that our bodies know exactly what to do and that our Birth will unfold exactly as it is meant to.

That’s a hard pill to swallow.

“Wait. You just said our bodies know what to do. Then how come that mom didn’t go into labor after an induction??”

“What about emergency C Sections?”

“What about big babies?”

“What about the fact that I’m past my due date?”

“What about my baby being breech?”

“What about the fact that I almost died? Was that in Nature’s “plan?”

Sometimes there is an answer. After the C Section, the OB discovers something about the baby’s positioning or a cord wrapped around the body or something that gives us some answers. Sometimes we just never know. There’s no answer. This is the hardest one because moms automatically want to blame themselves for things they did or didn’t do.

Here’s what I know: Both of my birthing experiences and what happened afterwards shaped and changed my life. It would be very easy to have a “victim’s mentality” about it all- which is where a lot of people end up. It’s taken me years of processing through all of it, but I’ve come to the conclusion that Nature/God/The Universe had a plan for me. And the things I experienced were so that I could help other women. So that I could have empathy for moms who have unexpected birth outcomes or debilitating postpartum depression. I’ve been there. And I’ve come out the other side. And I can’t help but to think there’s a reason for all of those experiences. I can’t help but to think that’s why I’m here today, on this path, doing this line of work that I absolutely love. I can see the sigh of relief when I talk with moms about what they are going through and the normalcy of it. That they didn’t “fail” because they didn’t have the birthing experience they wanted. That postpartum depression won’t consume you forever. That they will, ultimately, make it through to the other side.

While it’s hard to understand why things happen to us or why things turn out a certain way in our birthing experiences or even afterwards, have faith that everything is for a reason and there is something to be learned from all of our experiences in Life.
