I came across this short (15 minute) documentary yesterday. It is full of alarming facts, most of which I already knew, but to hear them again, out loud, is astonishing. The facts below are all stated in this documentary plus more:
• The most common operating-room procedure in the United States is the Cesarean section. In the 1970s, c-sections accounted for 5% of all births in the United States.
• Today, the surgery accounts for one in three American births. That is 1 out of 3 women!
• VBAC = Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. It is difficult to find a doctor who will perform a VBAC (as well as deliver a breech baby) in the United States.
• The risk of a uterine rupture is less than 1% in VBACs. Yes, a medical emergency but the risk is extremely low.
• Ninety per cent of women who deliver their first child by C-section do the same for their second.
• We are the only culture that repeatedly cuts on the same scar. (This is not good from a musculoskeletal and fascia related standpoint).
• The United States has a RISING maternal mortality rate.
• There is a lot that is not written in the medical text books.
Considering the United States is an industrialized country and we have access to such topnotch medical care, why can we not seem to UNDERSTAND pregnancy, birth, and the fourth trimester?!
Yes, things can be different!
